Pattammal, 7 other musicians to smile from postal covers
CHENNAI: Music lovers and philately enthusiasts can soon buy stamps featuring eight legendary musicians, including D K Pattammal.
Postmaster general Merwin Alexander said the stamps will be released on September 3 by India Post in association with Brahma Gana Sabha. The stamps will be up for sale from September 4 at Anna Road head post office and post offices across the state.
The other musicians in whose memory the stamps have been launched are sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan, sitarists Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Vilayat Khan, and vocalists Bhimsen Joshi, Mallikarjun Mansur, Kumar Gandharva and Gangubai Hangal.
Alexander said, "There have been many who have nurtured Indian classical music and made its presence felt across the country and abroad. India Post is paying tribute to such artists by releasing eight stamps in their memory."
He said music lovers from all walks of life, philately enthusiasts and the public in general are welcome to attend the event. Five million pieces of the stamps have been printed at the security printing press in Hyderabad, he added.
